Greece moves Patriot anti-ballistic missile system to Karpathos: report
Hmm...
According to a new Greek press report, Greek authorities have “decided to transfer a Patriot [anti-missile] battery to Karpathos,” and island which, that little detail notwithstanding, is poised to have a big touristic moment in 2026.
That is, of course, if the Real Warmongers of Washington don’t destroy the planet first. In the meantime, as Sky news notes, a “multi-million-dollar state-of-the-art Patriot missile for instance will bring down a drone worth only thousands, but doing so indefinitely is not sustainable.”
As war swirls in the Middle East and maybe in the vicinity, it’s worth recalling that on the placid Greek island of Hydra, Brad Pitt is still shooting what looks to be one of the most boring movies ever made. Seriously: a movie about a mid-life crisis-ish marriage that hits the skids, with the dude running around Europe looking for a woman who can’t stand him and ends up in Paris (don’t they always end up in Paris?) We get it Brad, maybe it’s cathartic (Greek word!) given your doomed dalliance with Angelina but please, up your project selection game. Y’all can get more kicks from watching this always on point assessment of the, uh, wisdom of war. Or even better, this one.
Karpathos anyway, along with smaller Kasos, is the most southerly island of the Dodecanese. It is mountainous and somewhat remote, with excellent beaches and authentic island culture preserved in small hilltop towns like Olympos. While Greek Column has not been to Karpathos we’ve flown over it and it looks tantalizing. Greeks have known about it for years, of course, as well as mainly European tourists.
There been plenty of chatter in the travel press about the (possibly delayed) debut of the Sound of the Sea Karpathos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. According to a press release:
“Sound of the Sea Karpathos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, following a franchise agreement with CHC Hotels, will bring a boutique, adults-friendly resort experience to Karpathos, Greece, marking the brand’s debut on the island. Slated for opening in the spring of 2025, the 43-key resort will offer guests an authentic island retreat, complete with direct beach access and locally inspired dining options. The resort will feature 42 rooms and one cottage, with 14 rooms offering private pools and six rooms equipped with mini spas. Guests can enjoy amenities such as an outdoor pool, fashion boutique shop, fitness centre, and wellness centre with three treatment rooms. Dining options include an à la carte restaurant with Greek organic cuisine and a fresh fish and seafood restaurant, as well as a snack and coffee/cocktail bar. The resort is conveniently located just 850 metres from Karpathos Pigadia port and 14.3 km from Karpathos Airport.”
As of March 4th, it looked like the battery had arrived on the island.
