How to Find Your Perfect Greek Island Restaurant
A trio of cool tables in Serifos, Sifnos, and Crete
SERIFOS, CYCLADES — The Chora, or main town, of this rocky, sun-blasted island is one of the most spectacular in the Cycladic archipelago. It’s all clean white surfaces and winding lanes clinging to a high hilltop with sweeping views of the Aegean and nearby islands. On a hot wind-blown summer’s night, away from the gaggle of bars and cafes in the tiny center, a walk around Chora feels like stepping into a de Chirico painting. There is something more than physical about the place, and you might not be able to put your finger on exactly what that is.
Not surprisingly, here in Chora is where you’ll find the island’s best restaurant, Seriani Restobar. It takes a bit of work to find it, and that underscores one of the main traits of that elusive thing called the ideal island restaurant: only rarely does one actually stare you in the face.
Disembark from any ship in any given island port in the Mediterranean and you’re greeted by the familiar cacophony of seafront activity, much of which centers around cafes and restaurants that frankly aren’t always very good.
To find a restaurant that’s worth your time and dime, leaning on the likes of Google and TripAdvisor is usually a mistake. The best thing, other than serendipitous discoveries, is to ask around. The locals always know what is bad, what is overrated, and what’s best. So we asked.
