Idiot French throw "corona party" in Greek seaside town; several chickens escape
Greek newspaper Ta Nea reports this morning that a “Corona party with dozens of young people in a villa in Loutsa” was organized by two students from an exchange program and that the police “imposed fines of 300 euros on the participants and fines of 3000 euros on the organizers.”
Loutsa is on the western coast of Greece about equidistant between Corfu and Lefkada.
The paper reports that a 20-year-old French guy—presumably a complete idiot—and an Italian, 28, organized the illicit bash, which was attended by about 75 others, mainly students. The article implies, but does not implicitly name Airbnb as the rental platform through which the villa, which notably is pink, was booked. Neighbors “saw groups of young people (mostly from Italy and France) disembarking from cars in front of the villa, while some of the guests had bags of alcoholic beverages with them.”
When police patrols arrived at the scene and many of the hosts’ fellow fools attempted to flee the scene some fell onto a chicken coop (was the chicken coop listed as one of the pink villa’s special amenities, we wonder?) breaking the wires, causing several of the startled fowl to escape into the chilly night, with only their feathers to keep them warm. Those birds know a thing or two about respecting a lockdown, and just want to be loved, not stepped on by silly “Erasmus” students with zero moral fibre. Sad!
Why this matters: While we can’t say for sure that the villa was rented via Airbnb, it wouldn’t be first the time that platforms like Airbnb have essentially a provided a platform for illegal or even criminal activity. While we believe in free enterprise, we also firmly believe in regulation and that Airbnb should be held to account for jeopardizing public health in the United States, Europe and around the world.
More importantly: Never forget, gentle reader, that the national symbol of France is a chicken. Oh, they’ll say it’s a rooster but come on…chicken.
Oh, and also: We very firmly believe that Airbnb is a total travel cop-out (no pun intended). Anyone who uses that or similar service is helping to destroy community, not strengthen it. If you’re thinking of flying to Europe anytime soon, you should book a hotel—we hear there are a few of them on the continent!—or go play golf in Texas.
