In Athens, and also everywhere, it's now officially cocktail o'clock
Check out the latest range of innovative Greek libations
The state of the world is not exactly peachy at the moment, is it?
It’s enough to make anyone want to make a beeline for the nearest bar. But you maybe don’t even have to go that far.
Thanks to Metaxa, a pair of nifty Greek cocktails may be as close as your nearest good grocery store. According to this well-established brand, “METAXA Peach Spritz and Ginger & Lime Long Drink are ready-to-drink cocktails, full of intense Greek flavors that bring vibrancy and enjoyment to every moment, WHEREVER YOU ARE. Each cocktail is perfectly balanced, highlighting its characteristic flavors with the distinctive touch of METAXA spirit.”
So far we’ve tried the Peach Spritz and it is damn good.
Now, supposing you choose the mocktail, i.e. sans alcohol route — there’s Tziki “Refreshingly Bubbly” craft sodas for that. The logo is a proud goat in a bowtie tending bar. They call him the Goatender, and he’s the only caprine we know of with a prehensile grasp.
Anyway, two of the varietals are pictured above, Pink Grapefruit and Creamy Peach. We rate both beverages highly.
The Pink Grapefruit is by far the best grapefruit soda we’ve ever tried, its agreeable fizz unfazed by any overly tart citrus bite; this soda’s smooooth.
We paired it with a splash of crème de cassis on the rocks, for a variation on one of our favorite Continental cocktails, “Le Old French Slut,” as seen above.
The Creamy Peach is the real revelation though: not too sweet but with just a suggestion of peach milkshake flavor, it’s a winner and served chilled, doesn’t even really need ice. We’d pair this baby with Le Old French Champagne.
You can mix either flavor into fruity cocktails of your own choosing or drink them neat (generally our preference except in times of war, income tax filing or phone calls from exes.)
The somewhat mysterious sodas are seemingly the creation of the Athenian Brewery — we’ve reached out for comment and will update as we get more information. Until then, Εβίβα! (Cheers).
