Is this the hippest new hotel in Athens?
She's young and a bit hard on the outside but Mona's a pussycat within
When it comes to choosing your hotel in Athens — and trust us, it’s the second-most asked question we get around here — there are basically three things you need to do, in no particular order:
Watch this space for personally inspected favorites.
Do not trust fuzzy and weirdly feline listicles from the geographically challenged.
Do not pay ridiculous rates for a hotel room in part because there’s a Picasso or whatever in the lobby (and that, not just because the price of your airfare just doubled.🪖⚔️🐘)
Because this is not London, after all (thank God — get back to us Britain once you’ve got more than a cartoon character for prime minister). This is Athens, aka boutique hotel heaven—seriously, new spots are dropping faster than your FYP refreshes. And right now? We’re obsessed with Mona, the cool-kid stay taking over Monastiraki.
Tucked right in the chaotic-chic heart of downtown Athens, Mona is giving industrial edge with a soft, artsy glow-up. You’re basically surrounded by the city’s hottest bars, lokey iconic restaurants, and indie designer shops—and oh, btw, the Acropolis is just a 10-minute walk away (yes, you will be taking rooftop pics with that view).
This hotel had us outside with its “what is that thing doing here” tease and inside at “translucent acrylic staircase in vaguely 1980s-Tribeca-esque lobby.”
Mona lives inside a revamped 1950s textile factory, so think raw, minimal, effortlessly cool. A soupçon of glamour, a hint of grit, it’s basically insider hip hotel address on blast. The street-level living room? Big “I’ll just open my laptop for a sec” energy—but suddenly it’s 3 hours later and you’re thriving. Remote work, but make it aesthetic.
There are only 20 suites, so it stays intimate and vibey. Expect dreamy boho touches—floaty bed canopies, standalone tubs, and that “I might move here” feeling. Not for fans of carpets; it’s more about hard surfaces here. It’s like Mona’s edgier sibling moment to Shila, but still keeps that soft, artsy soul.
Those of you who (yoohoo!) remember a certain moment in Manhattan retailing history (think Anthropologie in the early days, or Chelsea Market in the dangerous days, before it was ruined by New Jersey heathens and the kinds of oblivious people that walk around with their cellphones in the palms of their hands) might describe all this as a shabby chic aesthetic.
Not for everybody.
But it might just be for you.

The extras (aka why you’re booking…just not on the awful bookingdtcom):
Rooftop terrace (main character views), bar, cozy living room, underground event space, and breakfast to fix you after a long night out.
Hot tip: If you’re here in summer, don’t sleep on Club Monamour. The rooftop turns into a rotating pop-up of parties, art, and creative chaos with local talent—basically where you’ll pretend you live now.
Athens is having a moment. Mona is the vibe.
Address: Kakourgodikiou 4, Athina 105 54, Greece
Note that our favorite non-boutique hotel in Athens remains this one.
