The best little museum gift shops in Athens

There aren’t too many shopping days left until Christmas. It’s always surprising, or wait, not surprising, to see how many people cram average stores like Zara or Walmart to buy average gifts that nobody really wants.
That’s why it was so refreshing to pop into the beautifully renovated boutique at the National Archaeological Museum in the Exarchia section of Athens and see someone purchasing what appeared to be a life-sized replica of some ancient Greek god. Or maybe goddess. I couldn’t tell, because the cashier was busy wrapping half the thing in bubble wrap. Replica or not, a burly Zeus or comely Athena in your living room? That sure beats some generic stuff from Kohl’s or the outlets.
With that in mind, here’s a holiday-ready roundup of the best little (or not always so little) museum shops in Athens…
1. Benaki Museum Shop
At the gift shop of the Benaki Museum, you’ll find a wide selection of items inspired by Greek cultural heritage — from ceramics and jewellery to books, prints and exhibition-linked design pieces. 2. National Archaeological Museum Shop

3. Acropolis Museum shops

Remember, you don’t have to pay for an entry ticket if all you want to do (or have time for) is the gift shop. At some museums, like the National Archaeological Museum, you’ll need to tell the security staff that you want to go to the shop, and they’ll issue you a special ticket for that purpose.
