The Island That Banned Instagram*
Bet you'll never guess where!
Toward sunset, walking down the only commercial lane in town, or village rather, I saw the light. It was that incomparable kind of midsummer kind of crystal golden Greek island light, beaming against the curving whitewashed walls and making the signature bougainvillea flowers pop with neon pink.
A few other pedestrians took note too, pausing for a split second before carrying on with their shopping and strolling. This reminded me of a winter’s day in New York many years ago when the clouds over midtown parted and from Chelsea the Empire State Building and some shorter brick buildings in the foreground were illuminated with such a shocking clarity it stopped people in their busy tracks as they gawked at the rare sight.
This reminded me of the power of the absence of social media. In the spirit of that power of absence, here is the name of the island that has banned Instagram:
